It has been one year since our beloved son, brother, husband, father, and friend Nate, died by suicide. Nate, as many of you know, was a childhood victim of sexual assault and abuse by Norbertine priests while a student at Notre Dame High School. Since his death, we have been comforted, encouraged, and humbled by the support and outrage of Nate's fellow alumni and others who have organized and called for justice for Nate and his fellow survivors of clergy sexual abuse in the State of Wisconsin. The only way this can be done is when Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul opens a statewide inquiry into the actions that led to Nate’s wrongful death and the abuse of thousands of children in faith-based institutions.
If the clergy sex offenders and those who covered up for them had been brought to justice, Nate would be with us today. Sadly, Nate is hardly the only survivor of clergy abuse in Wisconsin who has taken their life because of the actions or inaction of church officials both before and after the crimes.
On Sunday, March 7th in Green Bay, we are asking you to rally with our family to celebrate Nate's life, thank his many supporters, and renew our call for change by launching, in his name and memory, a new statewide initiative for justice and accountability for survivors of abuse in faith-based organizations called "Nate's Mission."
Nate's Mission is simple - to fulfill his desire to stop clergy abuse, expose the cover up of these crimes, and bring justice and healing to survivors, their families, and the church. This effort begins with the Norbertines and ends when every diocese and religious order have been held accountable for their crimes, when the full truth has been told, when the systems that allowed these crimes to occur have been reformed, when survivors - especially those from marginalized groups - have access to healing, and when their experience is memorialized as a stronghold against its recurrence.
We are asking you to become a partner in this Mission, by joining us on March 7th to remember Nate and to launch Nate’s Mission.
