Cardinal McCarrick charged with sexual assault in Wisconsin
Dear Friends,
Today we learned that Cardinal Theodore McCarrick was charged with sexual assault for a second time - this time for crimes that took place at Lake Geneva in Wisconsin. McCarrick is the first Roman Catholic cardinal in the United States to be criminally charged for sexual abuse. Nate’s Mission is in solidarity with this clergy abuse survivor and all those who have been harmed by McCarrick and other abusive clergy members.
McCarrick abused children and seminarians for decades. His crimes were enabled by hundreds of individuals, including Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis. In our recent documentary, Manufacturing the Clerical Predator, former Wisconsin seminarian James Egan discusses a 2014 incident in which he was warned about McCarrick’s predatory behavior well before McCarrick was removed from the priesthood in 2019.
Manufacturing the Clerical Predator: How the Catholic Hierarchy Creates and Maintains a Culture of Abuse
Many of those who covered up McCarrick’s crimes so he could continue abusing children and seminarians are still in positions of authority - some of them overseeing child protection policies for Catholic dioceses across the country. Many of them continue to obstruct state investigations into rape and sexual abuse of children and vulnerable adults. Nate’s Mission is to prevent what happened to McCarrick’s victim and thousands of others across Wisconsin from happening to another child.
We need your support to continue our fight for justice and healing in Wisconsin and beyond. Please consider a tax-deductible contribution to Nate’s Mission.
Sincerely,
The Nate’s Mission Team
